Is zero credit worse than bad credit?
No credit means you don't have enough credit-related activity to generate a credit score, but bad credit means there are blemishes on your credit report. Regardless of whether you have no credit or bad credit, there are ways to build your credit score, including becoming an authorized user and making timely payments.
However, “A poor credit score is worse,” he says. “If you have no credit, you can start from the ground up. If you have poor credit, you're starting from below ground level and it takes longer to improve,” Reeder says.
While a 0% utilization is certainly better than having a high CUR, it's not as good as something in the single digits. Depending on the scoring model used, some experts recommend aiming to keep your credit utilization rate at 10% (or below) as a healthy goal to get the best credit score.
But your credit score won't start at zero, because there's no such thing as a zero credit score. The lowest score you can have is a 300, but if you make responsible financial decisions from the beginning, your starting credit score is more likely to be between 500 and 700.
A bad credit score is a FICO score below 580, meaning it falls in the poor credit range. Along the same lines, a bad score in the VantageScore model is one below 601, which would belong in the poor or very poor credit ranges.
Payment History: 35%
Paying late has a negative effect on your score. If you've paid late, how late were you: 30 days, 60 days, or 90+ days? The later you are, the worse it is for your score.
Poor (300-579): 300 is the lowest credit score a person can have, and it's impossible to drop below that number. Fair (580-669): Lenders and banks will look at a Fair score more favorably, but their best offers may still be out of reach. Good (670-739): Experian® reported 714 as the average credit score in 2022.
How long does it take to build credit from 0? It generally takes three to six months to get your first credit score, although the time it takes to build good credit is different for everyone. It depends on factors like what your credit scores are now, how you're managing debt and more.
History isn't instant. If you haven't used credit before, it usually takes at least six months to generate a credit score – and longer to earn a good or excellent score.
You make one payment 15 days before your statement is due and another payment three days before the due date. By doing this, you can lower your overall credit utilization ratio, which can raise your credit score. Keeping a good credit score is important if you want to apply for new credit cards.
How do I recover from a zero credit score?
The fastest ways to increase your credit score include paying bills on time, becoming an authorized user, increasing credit limits without increasing your balances, and paying off debts. Keep in mind, however, that it may take several months to see significant improvements in your score.
According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, as many as 45 million Americans are “credit invisible,” meaning they have no credit history. In most cases, this means they've never had any data reported to one of the three credit bureaus.
Potentially Harmful to Your Credit
Credit scoring models like to see some level of debt management, so a history of well-managed debt can be beneficial. If you have no debt – and have never had debt – you'll have no credit history. This can make it harder to rent an apartment or even get good car insurance rates.
Since income is not one of the five factors that determine a credit score, the wealthy are just as likely to have a low credit score as the people with lower income.
There is no minimum credit score for a job. Employers do not even have access to your score but some may check your credit history as part of the hiring process, especially if the job involves financial responsibilities or access to sensitive information.
What Is a Bad Credit Score? On the FICO® Score☉ 8 scale of 300 to 850, one of the credit scores lenders most frequently use, a bad credit score is one below 670. More specifically, a score between 580 and 669 is considered fair, and one between 300 and 579 is poor.
A bad credit score can make life difficult in a number of ways, and it can even delay retirement by costing you more money over time. But improving your credit score is about much more than luck, and it's only possible if you understand just how much your credit score impacts your life.
There's no such thing as a starting credit score. However, there are minimum requirements for generating your very first credit score. According to FICO, the minimum requirements are: You must have at least one credit account or loan open for a minimum of six months.
Poor credit can make it harder to get car and home loans, and to qualify for a regular credit card—you may need to start off with a secured credit card to build your credit. Even if you are offered a loan, chances are it will be at a higher interest rate.
What is the lowest credit score possible? Generally, credit scores range from 300 to 850, making 300 the lowest possible credit score. But it's important to note that you typically have more than one credit score. And they may differ depending on the credit-scoring company and when they were calculated.
What is the lowest credit score to buy a car?
Most used auto loans go to borrowers with minimum credit scores of at least 675. For new auto loans, most borrowers have scores of around 730. The minimum credit score needed for a new car may be around 600, but those with excellent credit often get lower rates and lower monthly payments.
The credit score required and other eligibility factors for buying a car vary by lender and loan terms. Still, you typically need a good credit score of 661 or higher to qualify for an auto loan. About 69% of retail vehicle financing is for borrowers with credit scores of 661 or higher, according to Experian.
Having no credit is better than having bad credit, though both can hold you back. Bad credit shows potential lenders a negative track record of managing credit. Meanwhile, no credit means lenders can't tell how you'll handle repaying debts because you don't have much experience.

Since everyone's credit journey is different, there's no one standard credit score everyone starts with. And you can have different credit scores depending on the credit-scoring model—either FICO or VantageScore. You won't start with a score of zero, though. You simply won't have a score at all.
